Fellow Saloner Lesa was discussing staycations over at her site today – a staycation is where you stay at home but travel with the aid of a book.
I thought this was an interesting idea and that I would share my travels with you all.
On Sunday I boarded a train from Bristol to London – and found myself transported to Kabul, Afghanistan with Khaled Hosseini‘s The Kite Runner. This is a truly amazing book and I recommend that you all make sure you read it if you haven’t already.
On Monday I boarded the train back to Bristol and found myself in Connecticut with Linwood Barclay’s fast-paced thriller, No Time for Goodbye. I honestly couldn’t put this book down, I stopped reading it long enough to make the journey home from the train station and eat some dinner – and then I snuggled upon the couch and read through to the end. A great book full of twists and turns.
During the week I’ve been travelling through college towns with Joshua Henkin’s Matrimony. This book covers a lot of ground, New York City, Northington – MA, California, Iowa City and Ann Abor – Michigan. I’ve never heard of Ann Arbor before but strangely it was also mentioned in my last book of the week…
Last night I picked up Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen; a frank look at a psychiatric hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kaysen’s memoir is frank and insightful and another book I’d recommend.
*phew* after all that travelling I’m quite exhausted and in need of a vacation! This afternoon I have plans to go back to Green Gables on Prince Edward Island.
What about you? Where have your books taken you this week?
Oh – if you’re interested in any of my reviews simply click on the book imagesĀ – Happy Sunday!

I’ve read The Kite Runner, and agree it is an amazing must-read. Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns yet? I loved it even more than The Kite Runner, which surprised me. My review’s on my blog if you want to read it.
I have Girl, Interrupted in my library, but I’ve never read it. I really liked the movie, but just haven’t gotten around to reading the book. I won’t part with it until I do though.

This was a fun post! I didn’t go far this week on staycation. The book I’m reading is set in NH and we’re in Maine for the summer. Luckily, the main character traveled to Kansas so I got to go further. I hope the rest of my summer vacation will be a staycation!

This week I’ve been travelling across the U.S. with Richard Ide’s 3 Aces. It’s a romantic suspense all wrapped up in a cross country road trip, and a really enjoyable read.
The Kite Runner is on my next buy list. It’s one I’ve wanted to read for ages, but just haven’t gotten around to picking up a copy yet.
Great Idea – books really take you places, don’t they – at least the best ones do. At the moment I’m in pre-war Paris (House in Paris by Elizabeth Bowen) , and before that I was in an unspecified university town in England (The Trick of It by Michael Frayn) and before that in Oxford (an unpublished manuscript I was editing for someone…So I haven’t been to anywhere really exotic. The ride was fun, though.

I love the idea of a Staycation. That was a fun post to read. I didn’t go too far this week. I live in New York and spent the week in Tucson, Arizona (Through a Glass, Deadly by Sarah Atwell) and now I’m going to Atlantic City (All About Evie by Beth Ciotta) and we’ll see where that takes me.

So, where are you when you’re at home, Mrs. S.? I just wondered when you said Ann Arbor was new to you. Just curious.
Sounds as if you enjoyed the staycation this week! Thanks for mentioning my trip. (smile)

Northington, Mass., is not a real place but it’s very evocative of Massachusetts college towns. This week I travelled to Sweden via Kjell Eriksson’s Demon From Dakar, and to New Orleans via Julia Reed’s book House on First Street. All while sitting in my hammock!

Love this idea!! This week I’m going to be in Botswana for at least a couple of days. After that…I’ll have to see where the TBR pile takes me!
