4 stars – a tale about books and finding your way in the world

The Secret of Lost Things is about…

Rosemary Savage; a Tasmanian girl of just 18 who finds herself alone in New York City and immersed in the strange happenings at an arcane bookshop.

The Arcade is a second hand bookstore frequented by serious collectors and staffed by a group of eccentric and eclectic individuals, all of whom have an effect on Rosemary as she tries to find her place in the world. From Pearl, the opera singing cashier who becomes a mother figure, to Oscar, the enigmatic character who Rosemary finds herself drawn to in a romantic way – but who can never return the affection. Perhaps the character who has the largest effect on Rosemary, Walter Geist – the store’s albino manager – takes her as his assistant and introduces her to a major literary cover-up.

From a story of a girl who finds herself alone in New York City lost in her affections of Oscar – a sort of rite of passage – Hay suddenly throws in this literary cover-up, a search for a lost manuscript, and the story takes on a detective/mystery element. Personally I found this quite confusing, the last novel I read about a lost manuscript was the Shakespeare Secret – a fast-paced mystery/thriller but this was quite different. Apparently Hay consciously mixed the different genres but to me it just didn’t sit quite right.

I’d recommend this book to…

Book groups – the book is certainly well written and covers the themes of death, grief and memory as well as deception and power – there is a lot to think about and discuss. The use of different authors within in the story and the literary angle would also prompt an interesting discussion.

Would I read another book by Sheridan Hay?

I think I would – though this one didn’t quite hit the spot I did enjoy Hay’s writing style and would look out for some more novels written by her.

You read The Kite Runner this year. I’m a teacher and one of the high school English classes at my school last year was reading this book. I had started it before, but didn’t finish it. All the students loved it so much, and I’m so glad the teacher picked it out. I ended up reading it in a weekend.

Anyway, thanks for the giveaway, and I hope you’re enjoying BBAW as much as I am!

Hello! I think the cover of the book is lovely. I read your review of “Girl Interrupted” by Susan Kaysen. My degree is in Psychology and the human mind interests me. Your mention of the human psyche and the differing definitions of sane vs. insane are interesting. Thanks, Cindi

I read both Stardust and The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time this year. I enjoyed both, although possibly Stardust a bit more just because it was not so gloomy. I’ve got The Kite Runner and The Book Thief on my Ipod, but I haven’t gotten around to either, yet.

Also, I blogged about your contest here.

Looking at your list, I’ve actually read quite a few of them, and there are a few more that are on my TBR list. To pick one: I read Stardust by Neil Gaiman in June.

Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery. I grew up watching the Kevin Sullivan Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and then later Anne of Green Gables the Continuing Story, and I’m anxiously awaking the new film in production. It was not until last year that I realized I had never actually read the stories, but only seen the films (including the Tales from Avonlea) and I knew I must have really missed out on some fabulous plot. So intermixed all the rest of my TBR pile I have decided to go back and read them all. (And bought ALL of the LM Montgomery books I could find from someone on Ebay. It was a pretty penny, but is providing for much needed fun reading.)

Please do enter me on your entries as well. Thanks!
