4 stars – an enjoyable adventure with a great twist

The Thief is about…

A thief called Gen who is enlisted by the King’s magus to steal the ultimate prize; a gift of the gods that promises a royal appointment and immortality.

As the novel opens we are introduced to Gen, a thief in chains who was thrown into the King’s jail for stealing the king’s seal and then bragging about it. Gen is visited by the magus (the king’s scholar) who wishes to use Gen’s skills to steal a hidden treasure from a foreign land.

Along with Pol, Sophios and Ambiades the thief and the magus set out on a journey across hostile lands to a hidden temple where Gen must call on all of his skills and put his faith in the lap of the gods as he searches for a mythical treasure.

The Thief takes the reader on a linear journey, revealing more about each of the characters as each day passes. The adventure is fast-paced at times and had me turning the pages as fast as I could to find out what would happen next. I enjoyed the tales of the gods that are told by the fireside; of how the earth was created and the trials of Eugenides, the god of thieves.  The book finished with a twist that I didn’t see coming, but successfully tied  all of the pieces of the story together.

While this is a Young Adult book I enjoyed it and would recommend it to other adults; perfect reading for an afternoon by the fire on a cold winter’s day.
