The Change Artist by Carla Rieger

The Change Artist by Carla Rieger is a thought-provoking journey into the effects of war on a family.

My book review rating: 5 stars – this book is heart-warming and thought-provoking and one I will definitely read again

The Change Artist tells the story of Fran Freeman, a woman who has spent her whole life trying to please her father, and finds herself on a journey to the other side of the world, in search of a sister she never knew she had and the answers she needs to understand her father’s past and clear his name in a legal case.

From modern day Vancouver, Rieger takes us on a journey back to the 1930s in Vienna, into Germany in wartime and then across the Sahara Desert as Fran uncovers the secrets of her father’s past. This is a beautiful novel of love and family, of war and tragedy and people struggling for survival. It’s heartbreaking but inspiring and reminds us all that life is what we make it, and that our stories live on through our loved ones.

Last year I read a few books about the Holocaust but this one looks at the atrocity from a whole new angle; in writing The Change Artist, Carla Rieger delivers a beautiful story woven by a compelling storyteller which will teach you things you may not have known about our history, make you think about the way you lead your life, and remind you that life and family are precious and should not be taken for granted. You should add it to your bookshelf today.

Get Ready for an Adventure!

The Change Artist is an inspiring, intriguing story that will take you on an adventure around the world and back in time with the protagonist as she discovers her father's hidden past by piecing together cryptic hints. Mysterious and captivating, this book will hold your attention until the last page is turned.

I'm a fan of World War II historical fiction and I thought Carla Rieger did an excellent job researching the life and times of the Romani culture before and during the Holocaust.

I recommend The Change Artist to those who are a fan of World War II fiction. This book was so mesmerizing, I could not put it down!
Carla Rieger has written a compelling story, inspired by true events in her own life.

After her father's death, Carla Rieger found the journal she had once given him and discovered he had filled it with details about the secrets of his past.

This discovery became the catalyst for The Change Artist, a semi-autobiographical journey of discovery, in which Fran, the heroine, uncovers her father's two hidden lives, including a gypsy heritage and Nazi past, discovers a sister that she never knew she had, and frantically searches for the truth.

Rieger has mastered the art of the page-turner; as the narratives of different characters intersect and diverge, the reader is compelled to find out what happens next. Written in a style influenced by Dan Millman and Dan Brown, The Change Artist is a mythic journey that blends fiction with truth, offering lessons in creativity, spirituality and history along the way.
A great read for a long weekend

The story is excellent and certainly kept my attention. The side stories worked very well also. It obviously a result of enormous research and energy. I have read a lot of novels and ranked this one right up there not only for the story itself but because I found great education in it as well. Not only is there great entertainment value with the story there is a lot of knowledge about World War 2 Germany and the Gypsy world. Facts that most of us don't know.

Romance, adventure, history, philosophy--- what else could you ask for? A thought-provoking page-turner that illuminates a little-known period of history and makes it relevant for today. Highly recommended.

This book is not only an completely engrossing read, it nicely describes something I wholeheartedly believe in: living your life as a work of art. I was drawn into the story easily, and as it unfolded, I found myself really enjoying the way the main character developed. Her awakening to her self made this story much more than your average adventure. Knowing that this book is a fictionalized version of real events in the author's life makes it all the more potent. As much as I liked reading it, I can't wait to see the movie!
