The Drowning Girl by Margaret Leroy

The Drowning Girl by Margaret Leroy is an intriguing tale of past lives and tragedy

My Book Review Rating: 4 stars

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I picked this book up off the shelf at the store, but the cover caught my eye so I dropped it in the basket. I wondered if it might be a tale about babies swapped at birth, butit was something quite different.

Grace is a single mum, living in a not-so-nice part of London, making ends meet at a local florist, and struggling to cope with her young daughter Sylvie. Her little girl has an irrational fear of water, has uncontrollable tantrums, and is insistent that her best friend is ‘not the real Lennie’.

When Sylvie is expelled from nursery for her strange behaviour and Grace loses her job because she can’t find another nursery to take her daughter she goes against the advice of her friends and contacts a professor who researches the paranormal.

When Sylvie sees a photograph in a magazine of a small town in Ireland that she’s never been too but where she swears she has a house with a dragon and a cave Grace throws convention out of the window and embarks on a journey of discovery with her small child and the paranormal professor.

Once in Ireland the trio make discoveries that Grace would never of dreamed of, and learns why her daughter has never felt completely like her own child.

I was drawn in to the story from the start – and the many twists and turns made it a satisfying read. For my UK readers you will understand when I say this would make a perfect ITV drama mini-series!

If you’re looking for a novel that’s out of the ordinary – give this one a try.
