| this book was amazing, i personally think this book is better then the twilight series.... i think this one has more of a story line/plot to it. its not just that she loves some guy ( *cough* twilight plot) great read although the beggining confused me a bit, re-read at least twice and the whole story makes a bit more sense |
Great book! Definitely worth the read and worth buying!

| I have to say that like most readers on here I bought this book after reading the Twilight books (twice in a row actually, lol). After having enjoyed those books so much (and I'm not usually a fan of the whole "Vampire" genre b/c it's usually cheesy and cliche), I was really interested in reading another great book. Hoping that SM's writing could transcend to another plotline I bought The Host. Like another reviewer wrote, I was a bit skeptical b/c the back synopsis didn't do the story justice. It was SO much better than that. I don't agree w/ppl who say it's slow moving and/or anticlimactic. The book isn't meant to be a shoot em' up, sci-fi extravaganza. While there are many suspensful/on-the-edge-of-your-seat scenes, I think its more of a thought-provoking love story, about human nature, love, and the intricacies of human emotion and relationships. It speaks to the heart of the human experience and like all of SM's books, has you asking "where do the lines of rigt vs. wrong blur? and what defines good vs. evil?" I found it to be very suspenseful and never boring. I do agree that she loves her martyr heroines and strong brooding males, but she writes them so well that I can't complain. They're enjoyable just the same. Plus, the appeal of her male characters are the core of what so many like - a seemingly misunderstood badboy, who's really good underneath it all. This isn't supposed to be a biography. It's fantasy and escapism at it's best, with the right mix of true human emotion and conflict to make the characters empathetic and relatable. I loved it and would definitely recommend it! |
Very difficult read **warning: spoilers**

I bought this book when it came out...I just finished it two days ago... That's how long it took me to press through this fairly awful book.
I must admit that I had little sympathy for Wanda throughout the entire book, as it was her species purpose, and her's as first as well, to eliminate the entire human race. I found her inability to understand that, and turn around all call people monsters perplexing. Was seeing torn up alien babies horrific? Of course, but being that she's supposed to be a creature of a higher intelligence, I would assume she would understand how painful it would also be to watch your empty loved ones bodies walk around and buy groceries, all the while knowing it was just a shell operated by a parasite.
I never took the time to memorize everyone's name as most of these characters were NOT essential, though I was constantly trying to be convinced that they mattered by the endless repetition of their names. Brandt? Lucina? All of these people were unnecessary to focus on at all.
I also agree with another reviewer who said that the characters are written as all good or all bad, and the ones who even fluctaute an inch DIVE over in an instant. There is never anything that really develops. Relationships just happen.
I don't expect any back up on this next opinion, but I found the general plot COMPLETELY interchangable with the Twilight series. Same triangle (regardless of the fact that 3 1/2 people are involved) the same poorly manufactured dangerous moments, same complete and utter control over the lead girl as if her mind is made of jello (recalling the scene where THE MEN sat around and decided what Wanda should do about leaving Melanie's body. Yet Wanda barely spoke at all. It was up to them to decide what SHE would do with herself)
I really wanted to like this book. I truly did, but I could not stand the characters (least of all Ian who did a whole lot of pulling and tugging and yanking and squeezing of wrists...which Wanda/Melanine didn't seem to have any real problem with which disturbed me)and the story just seemed very rehashed.
As a side note, I have a very hard time dealing with the way the story is written. There must be at least 70 seperate descriptions of the same thing, (Wanada's end, protecting "her" humans at any cost, her breath catching every 20 seconds)
And I still don't know why it's characterized as adult and not young adult. I've read young adult books that were much violent than this.
To sum up, I'm done with Stephenie Meyer and her poor writing skills. |
THE HOST IS HARD TO PUT DOWN! GREAT BOOK!

| I had the hardest time trying to get through this book. It took forever to get to a chapter that kept my interest. I kept waiting for the story to pick up. The internal conversations were hard to follow at times. If I had to put it in a category, I think it's still like her other books and would gear it towards young adults. |
Love how easy it is..

I'm not big into reading - but loved the Twilight Saga.
When i finished that i picked up The Host since it was by the same author. The first 3 chapters were kinda slow and hard for me to get into, but I am so glad I continued to read. I feel in love with this book and the characters in it.
I would totally recommend this book to friends! |

| I recieved this book as a gift and was hesitant to read it because the whole alien factor sorta frieked me out but because I am an avid twilight/stephenie meyer fan I decided to give it a shot. The story was suprisingly not freaky but another love story with some action in it, simialar to twilight. I would highly reccomend this book to any fan of twilight! |

| I enjoyed the internal struggle of the two main characters, it mimics in ways, ones own struggle with their own inner self(s). Much better story than the whole "saga". |
Loved this book

I didnt think I could love another set of characters after Twilight. But I absolutely love Wanda and Ian. I loved this book. Give it a chance. It is slow in areas but I think it helps to draw you in. Just a great story.
The thing that pleasantly caught me off guard was the development of the loving relationship between Wanda and Ian O'Shay! I kept expecting for Jared to come around and then here come Ian. I love him. I loved when he kissed her and asks 'good or bad'. I also loved when he let her know that he loved her not Mel's body by saying ' its not the face but the expressions, its not the voice but what you say, its not the body but what you do with that body, I love you'. (I may not have the quote perfect but ya get my drift). I also loved how the some of the other characters in the story accepted her and loved her stories. I loved how she loved Jamie and how her and Mel grew to consider themselves sisters.
I am now officially a Stephanie Meyer fan; not just a fan of The Twilight Saga. I will read what ever she puts out because in her books love conquers all. This is the way I feel and approach life. So nice to see it in print; and in such a creative way.. Again, I loved this book! |

| I read this book after reading the Twilight series and it took me a little while to get out of the Twilight mindset. I really enjoyed this book once I got out of the trying to make it fit with the Twilight type of story. I have heard from other people that they had the same problem of trying to fit it into the Twilight mold, but once they got past that they also really enjoyed it. |
Not to be compared to the Twilight saga

| Ok book. Nothing like the Twilight saga. Will be disappointing if compared to those. However, standing alone - decent book. Not my thing though. Gotta like that type of supernatural to enjoy. |

| When I first completed the Twilight Series, I was so hungry for the extreme connections I felt with those books, the characters and the emotions. The Host was similar, and different. It did fill the thirst I had for the new and unimagined. This author is awesome, and I would read whatever she puts out there. You will enjoy the twists and turns! |
Okay for Science Fiction

| Obviously this book will never be the success that Twilight is. I did like the writing style of Twilight so I thought I'd try this one too. If you like science fiction then you will probably like this story but it isn't a page turner. I kept reading long after I lost interest just to see where she was going with it. There were a few places towards the end that peaked my interest but the ending was predictable. While I did like most of the characters in this story I found some of them to lack personality. If you like alien invasion this story is for you, if you are expecting to fall in love witht the characters you probably won't. If you want something as good as Twilight you'll be disappointed. Otherwise - pick it up at the library and don't buy the book. It isn't worth keeping in your collection. |

This book was a gift from my boyfriend. Since I'm positive that he loves me, I know this wasn't done as a mean trick or as a way to make me suffer. He knows that I'm a huge Twilight fan and thought it would be a nice gesture to buy me something to read while I was traveling.
When I got home, Stephenie Meyer's terrible excuse for a story forced me to lie to him when I said it was OK. It was terrible but I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was a complete dud. Especially after I have so defended Twilight from his teasing. I can't really name anyone besides the main characters and can't really tell them apart. I'm not a science fiction fan but I just couldn't stomach the alien/human sharing their significant others with people. Maybe it's just me and this is normal for the genre...either way, not my cup of tea.
Thank God I previewed this book- I almost picked this as my selection for book club. I would be even more upset about having read this if Stephanie's BS book got me the boot from the club. |
