Getting Things Done or GTD is a time management technique that will help you get your life organised, and this book walks you through the mindset step by step.

I first read this book nearly four years ago, and it is one that I revisit regularly. I first picked it up because I was struggling with time management and prioritisation and I was searching for the holy grail; I can’t remember how many of these self-help books I’ve read but Getting Things Done is the first one that really clicked.

I’m not the only person who has discovered that the GTD system can actually help keep your life on track either. Just ask Google. A search for Getting Things Done will deliver over 136 million results! You’ll find books and articles by David Allen, books and articles about David Allen, software that helps you implement the GTD strategy and people talking about how they use software to implement the GTD strategy. It’s a worldwide phenomenon!

The best thing about this strategy is that its easy to remember and easy to put into action – you just need to remember to Do it, Delegate it, Defer it or Drop it. Those four simple rules will help you take control of your inbox, instead of letting it control you.

In Getting Things Done, Allen walks you through the strategy and shows how you can get your life under control using a five-step planning model that you can apply to anything from planning a dinner out to managing a major project.

He helps you set up the tools that you need to use the GTD strategy, and you don’t need to spend any money to do so. He then helps you collect, process and organise everything that you have buzzing around in your head right now. Once you have your projects back on track he then shows you how to stay organised.

If one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to be more productive, or more organised or less stressed then this is a great book for you to start the year with.

If you want to know more about the strategy before you buy the book then check out this video of a presentation David Allen delivered to Google a couple of years back:

I love to read books - and only wish that I had more spare hours in the day to devote to this wonderful hobby. When life gets tough you'll find me with my nose stuck in a book, escaping from reality. Blue Archipelago is my reading journal, feel free to have a browse around and see if you discover something new to read, or rediscover a book that you have loved in the past.
