One hundred years ago this month Lucy Maud Montgomery held in her hands a novel about a red headed orphan who came to live on Prince Edward Island: “There, in my hand, lay the material realization of all the dreams and hopes and ambitions and struggles of my whole conscious existence — my first book,” she wrote in her journal that day. “Not a great book, but mine, mine, mine, something which I had created.”
Since that day the book has been read and enjoyed by countless people from across the globe and it seems only right that we celebrate the girl who became “the dearest, and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice.”
I’m inviting you all to join me as I host my first mini challenge: Celebrating 100 years of Anne.
To participate you simply need to read Anne of Green Gables, or any of the sequels – you might even consider Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson which was inspired by the classic series.
Then tell us what you love about Anne; you might want to tell us why you are a fan of the novels, how old you were when you first discovered the infamous red-head, your favourite scene in the book or comment on the relationship Anne has with the other characters in the book – it’s entirely up to you.
The nitty gritty
- This mini challenge will run from today (June 7) until July 31, 2008.
- Sign up using the Mr Linky box below
- You need to read at least one of the books from the series (if you’ve already read one in 2008 I’m happy for you to join in!)
- Write a post on your blog sharing your thoughts on the book; favourite scene, relationships etc
- When your post is written come back here and post the link to your post in the comments box
- If you don’t have a blog then write your thoughts in the comments box
I hope you’ll join me in this mini challenge and help to celebrate such a timeless classic.

If I can order more books in the series in time, I will definitely join you. I’ll let you know for sure in a few days.

I just came across your Anne of Green Gables challenge while browsing the list of challenges at A Novel Challenge to see if there were any new ones (I joined that group about 2 months ago and I have about 30 challenges going, but have yet to finish one!) This will be my first completed challenge and I am glad that the book is available at Project Gutenberg. If I ever did read Anne, I fogot all about it, but I remember watching the series on Public Television about 20 years ago. Judy
