Currently Reading | Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Why did you choose to read this book?
When I was looking for ideas for the Classics Challenge my friend Emma suggested Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Having been turned against Dickens when forced to read Hard Times at the tender age of eleven I was a little dubious – so rather than rushing out to buy a copy I decided to listen to the novel instead – courtesy of LibriVox.
The reader, Chris Hughes, had me completely captivated by his reading of the novel – but unfortunately he’d only recorded up to chapter eight. So, having just been introduced to the eccentric Miss Havisham I found myself wondering what on earth happened next!
I headed straight over to Book Mooch and luckily managed to track down a copy of the book – so thanks to the wonder of the Internet my faith in Dickens has been restored and I’m about to settle down with Chapter nine…

Isn’t it strange how we’re all reading this at the same time for the Classics Challenge! I have to admit I’m struggling a little as it requires a certain amount of concentration – but I am enjoying it. Perhaps when we’re all done we can discuss it over at the Blue Archipelago Virtual Book Club?
Clare: It seems like the universe is aligned just right as I’m reading this book right now too, and also for the Classics Challenge. Odd, isn’t it? I’m enjoying it immensely. Now talking about it, suddenly I want to go read it.

Oh Miss Havisham is great! And Estella–even though I’ve wanted to kick her in the shins multiple times. Dickens altogether is wonderful (although Hard Times isn’t my favorite). I have Oliver Twist on the list for the classics challenge but I’m having trouble getting motivated. I can’t wait to hear what you think of this one when you’re all done!

I’ve just started this one too for the Classics Challenge. I’m just getting to Pip going to Miss Havishams. It’s hard not to like Pip though. I’ve found myself already giggling in more than one spot. I hope you enjoy it!
