Book Review | Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Treat yourself to Anne of Green Gables today

Rating

5 stars – I enjoyed this re-read as much as I did the first time I read the book

Description

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert are in for a big surprise. They are waiting for an orphan boy to help with the work at Green Gables – but a skinny, red-haired girl turns up instead. Feisty and full of spirit, Anne Shirley charms her way into the Cuthberts’ affection with her vivid imagination and constant chatter. It’s not long before Anne finds herself in trouble, but soon it becomes impossible for the Cuthberts to imagine life without ‘their’ Anne – and for the people of Avonlea to recall what it was like before this wildly creative little girl whirled into town.

Why did you choose to read this book?

I read the Anne series when I was younger and loved every book – this month celebrates the centenary of this great classic so I thought it was as good a time as any to reacquaint myself with this feisty red-head.

The Book Review

Anne of Green Gables tells the tale of a young orphan girl who is adopted by brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Having spent much of her childhood keeping house and looking after small children – including three sets of twins – Green Gables offers Anne a chance to be a child herself; a place where she can let her imagination run wild.

The novel charts Anne’s life from eleven through to fifiteen, as she finds herself in countless scrapes and mishaps, is acquainted with her bosom-friend and makes an enemy from a boy who dares to call her ‘Carrots’.

I loved this book as much now as I did the first time, it was almost like reminiscing with an old friend as I found myself anticipating the next mishap and smiling at Anne’s imaginings.

Please don’t write this off as a children’s novel – if you haven’t read this book before you should add it to your list – and if you have now might be a good time to revisit it.

Oh and if you do read it before July 31 be sure to stop by and sign up for my Celebrating 100 years of Anne mini-challenge.

I’m now looking forward to Anne of Avonlea – the next installment in the Anne series.

Book Review | Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson

It’s odd really to read a book where you already know the start the middle and the end yet Wilson does such a fantastic job of making you think you are learning all this information anew, and that at any time Anne’s life could take a turn in a completely different direction!

Myrthe – glad to hear you’re enjoying the book the second time round.

Linda I’m shocked ;) You really do need to read the book though – it’s fabulous – and has stood the test of time very well

I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve never read this book and I’m an English teacher! What’s wrong with me?! I do have a journal with pics and quotes from the book that I love so will definitely have to pick this up at my next bookstore visit.

    Well-written review!

I am enjoying the book so much! I am reading it through Daily Lit in daily installments, but I wait until I have all the installments for one chapter so I read it a chapter at a time, a couple per week, mostly while I am at work. ;-) This is the first time I am reading Anne in English, when I was young I read the entire series in Dutch translation (my native language). I am having a blast revisiting the book!
