4 stars – a modern day tale with a historical twist

Description

When Susanna Smith goes to Massachusetts to settle her aunt’s estate she doesn’t expect her well-ordered life is about to take an unusual turn. Susanna and her canine friend Quincy embark on a journey to the past that not only reveals a connection to a famous ancestor but also results in an important discovery about her own life.

The Book Review

Susanna Smith has always known that she was a descendant of Abigail Smith Adams, the wife of John Adams – second President of the United States; however it is not until the death of her aunt that she comes to understand what an amazing role model Abigail really was.

In this, her debut novel, Norma Betz does a excellent job of entwining a present day coming of age tale with a historical twist as Susanna learns about her family history through a set of letters written by Abigail on the brink of the American Revolution.

This is a heartwarming tale packed with historic drama and great friendship – with a sprinkle of romance and a dramatic twist. Suitable for adults and young adults alike you should give this book a try if you are interested in American history – or you are an animal lover.

The reason for the missing fifth star in my rating is down to the slightly clunky conversations at times during the book, and the hard to read “handwritten” font that has been selected for Abigail’s letters – both of which serve to slow down what is actually a fast-paced and intriguing tale.

The novel opens with Waverly being jilted by her perfect fiance just two weeks before her perfect wedding, from there we are thrown into Waverly’s life – from her job in sports PR, to her relationships with her best friends Andie and McKenna, and her search for Mr Right – which involves many cringe-worthy yet entertaining dates.

Book Review | What if…? by Steve N. Lee

This book has all of the hallmarks of an action-packed novel; conspiracies, shootouts, double-crosses and car chases – throw in religious unrest and a presidential election and you’ll find yourself caught up in an exciting tale that also forces you to think about the way we live our lives and whether we are killing the planet with our actions.
