Hey everyone – today we have another interview with Sean Beaudoin, author of the wonderful comic sci-fi thrillerFade to Blue.
Clare: Hi Sean – thanks for taking time out to be interviewed here at Blue Archipelago today. Let’s kick off by talking about what inspired you to write Fade to Blue.
Everyone kept asking if the character Stan from Going Nowhere Faster was really me. I kept saying no, mostly because it’s true. But they never really seemed to believe it, all “yeah, okay, sure he’s not.” So I decided to write a character where there was no chance they’d ever ask that question. And Sophie Blue has done the trick so far. Even when I wear black lipstick.

Clare: You’ve got a good point there – nice lipstick by the way
So if the characters aren’t based on yourself did you base the characters of Kenny and Sophie on anyone you know?
Not really. Maybe little traits, but even then I couldn’t tell you which ones exactly. It all sort of melds together after a while: that line is Jim, that hair is Sue, that annoying accent is Ralph, etc.
Clare: I suppose all inspiration has to come from somewhere. How did you come up with the names for your characters?
A lot of people talk about how hard a time they have with names. For some reason they tend to come easily for me. I just close my eyes and they’re there. Plot, on the other hand, almost never is just there. Neither is a guy at the door with a pizza.
Clare: Hmm – you’re right about that pizza man! I assume you enjoyed reading as a child – what was your favourite book growing up?
Depends what age you mean. When I was really young, it was all about Richard Scarry. Then Roald Dahl. Where The Red Fern Grows took over around eighth grade, I think. In high school it was Cat’s Cradle, The Basketball Diaries, and Great Jones Street.

Clare: Some interesting choices there Sean. What inspired you to become a writer?
It seemed clear fairly early that playing with words was a likely and desirable path for me to follow. I was never much for wearing a suit. I can’t cook. I can add numbers in my head, but am sort of spatially dim. And people rarely seemed to say “Wow, is that kid fast. He should go pro.” So, writing it was.
Clare: LOL – Good enough reason for me. Is there a book in history that you wish you could have written?
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, because it would mean I was not only a brilliant linguist, but also the man who predicted in 1963 that over-exposure to Shia Labeouf would doom our culture. Enough Labeouf!
Clare: As I was reading fade to Blue I thought it would make a great movie – who would you cast as the main characters?
It would be easier to say who I wouldn’t want. Jennifer Aniston is out. I’d pass on Jude Law and Vin Diesel also. Julia Roberts is a big no. Same goes for Tommy Cruise. No one who is a Sir or a Dame. No Sheens. And definitely no Christian Bale.
Clare: Sorry guys if you’re reading! Finally Sean I’ll turn the interviewer status over to you – if you could interview yourself what question would you ask and what would the answer be?
Q: What is the frequency, Kenneth?
A: Who is John Galt?
’nuff said!
Thanks Sean – good luck with the book
